Over the last few years our public libraries have been under attack. Hundreds of small libraries have been closed, and thousands of jobs have been lost. Hours, services and resources have all have been cut as the remaining service has been hollowed out. The problem isn’t limited to public libraries – many schools have done away with their school libraries, while an ideologically-packed curriculum leaves little time for teachers to take pupils and students to public libraries. Because this has happened over several years, on a piecemeal basis and in different parts of the country at different times, and because the remaining staff are being gagged about what is happening, opposition has been sporadic.
